Can you guess what you're touching 3000 times per day?
You might not realize how much you touch your face, but your skin does. Follow our advice on how to keep it happy.
On average you touch your face 2000 to 3000 times per day – that’s 2 to 5 times a minute! If this seems crazy to you, then take a moment to observe where your hands are right now. Is one of them under your chin or on your cheek as you read this sentence? Did you just feel an itch and have to scratch your nose? We can almost bet that you answered ‘yes’ to at least one of these statements. Are our hands our skin’s own worst enemy? Let’s investigate.
Opening a door, pushing a button in the elevator, retying our shoelaces, sending a text on our phones… we automatically do these things daily and so often that they’ve become automatic reflexes. What we don’t realize however - or perhaps just don’t want to admit - is that each time we touch something our hands come in contact with bacteria. When we touch our faces afterwards that very bacteria is transmitted, creating pimples and other skin imperfections. Keep skin clean by washing your face two times a day with micellar water or makeup removing cleanser and by trying to be more conscious of when you touch your face.
How to wash your hands the right way
We were taught as kids about the importance of washing our hands, but what we often overlooked was how to do it. Check out this poster created by the World Health Organization that explains the steps needed to wash hands properly – do you spend the recommended 40-60 seconds cleaning them?
Top tip: If you’re pressed for time then a hand sanitizer is great to keep on your desk or in your bag. Most antibacterial gel solutions are enriched with Aloe Vera and Pro-Vitamin B5 so that skin doesn’t get dried out, however it’s still a good idea to follow up with a hand cream to keep hands well hydrated.
