5 steps to your most sustainable skincare routine yet

Take care of your skin and the planet at the same time

Global population is predicted to reach around 9.6 billion by 2050. If this happens the United Nations conclude we’d need the equivalent of almost three planets, just to provide the natural resources required to sustain current lifestyles. Although changes from industry and big business are key, individual choices can be just as powerful. Take action towards sustainability in your skincare routine through these 5 simple steps.

Ways to go green in your beauty routine

#1 Conserve water

The Earth may be 70% water, but only 2.5% of that is freshwater, making it a precious resource. An average shower uses 2.5 gallons of water every minute, meaning a leisurely ten minute wash wastes 25 gallons. Shaving even just a few minutes off your showering time will help to reduce your water footprint, as will turning the water off whilst you lather up with your favourite shower gel.

#2 Avoid microbeads

Most commonly found in facial and body exfoliators as well as toothpastes, microbeads are tiny plastic particles which don’t biodegrade. After going down the drain they end up polluting the waterways, and even the food chain as they’re eaten by marine life. Shockingly, by 2050 oceans are expected to contain more plastics than fish . Although many countries are beginning to ban microbeads, they are still out there. Opt for more environmentally friendly exfoliators, like Biosource Daily Exfoliating Gelée , which says no to polyethylenes and is more than 89% biodegradable.

#3 Buy bamboo brushes

It’s estimated that over one billion toothbrushes end up in landfill every year in the US alone. Bamboo offers a sustainable and biodegradable alternative for toothbrushes, makeup brushes and hair brushes.

#4 Simplify your routine

Reducing the number of potions and lotions in your bathroom cabinet is great for your bank balance as well as the environment. Choose multi-tasking products to streamline your skincare routine and reduce waste. Biosource Cleansing Micellar Water cleanses, tones and removes makeup in one step, whilst Blue Therapy Multi-Defender SPF 25 is a skincare superhero. It’s the first moisturizing anti-aging cream to simultaneously protect against outdoor skin aggressors like UV and pollution.

#5 Do your homework on who you’re buying from

As a consumer, you have power. Check out the environmental credentials of who you give your money to. Are they utilizing recycled plastics? Are they investing in sustainable ingredients? What are their environmental commitments? Since 2011, Biotherm has been fighting to save the planet’s ocean and aquatic biodiversity through the Water Lovers platform , with proceeds from the sale of the Water Lover’s Limited Range going to water-saving charities. It’s a cause close to the brands heart, as many of the products “star” ingredients like Life Plankton and algae extracts are sustainably harvested from the water's depths.

You may not be able to save the world alone, but small changes by individuals to protect our planet collectively create big differences.
