Read this to never Google dry skin again

Has your skin been feeling parched recently even though it’s not even winter yet?

Have you typed “dry skin” into Google at all over the past year? You’re not alone: according to Beauty Track Europe 4 and Google Trends, there were 2x more searches for those words in 2015 as compared to 2010. But what’s making your skin feel so itchy and uncomfortable and what can you do to get your glow back?

The top 4 factors that cause dry skin

Your age: As you get older, your skin becomes thinner and isn’t able to retain moisture as well as when you were in your teens or 20s. It also produces less natural oils, causing your face and body to feel – and appear – drier.

Hormones: When your hormones are thrown out of balance, you are more susceptible to developing dry skin. This could be from stress, pregnancy, or when you go through menopause.

Environmental factors: When there’s less humidity in the air (from indoor heating, cold outdoor temperatures…) it zaps your skin of moisture. Free radicals are another culprit which attempt to compromise your skin’s barrier. They make it harder to stay hydrated and accelerate the aging process, causing you to develop premature fine lines and wrinkles. Free radicals can form from exposure to pollution, UV radiation and cigarette smoke.

Your diet: Essential fatty acids (i.e. omega-3, omega-6) help your skin naturally produce oil and keep your cells healthy and happy. Dry skin can result if you don’t get enough of them in your diet.

How to combat dry skin

-Adopt a nutritive skincare routine in order to add more moisture to your skin and to plump fine lines and wrinkles

-Take cool showers and apply face cream and body lotion right after you get out, to lock in moisture

-Use a Clarisonic to buff away dry, dead skin cells and to help the cell turnover process

-Amp up your antioxidant and omega-3 and omega-6 intake. Do this topically, with skincare products, and internally with food, like superfruits and avocados, to fight free radicals

-Stay well-hydrated

Once you understand what’s causing your dry skin, it’s easy to fight back to make it smooth and radiant again. And don’t forget: If you ever want to speed up the process, Biotherm’s new Serum-in-Oil and Cream-in-Oil are very similar to your own skin’s composition. They will deeply nourish and repair your dry skin – you’ll see results after just 1 application!
